Within six months of purchasing a new home, my husband and I decided that the kitchen had to be remodeled. Originally we planned to remodel only the outside of our newly purchased older home (new roof, siding, windows and front porch) and remodeling was underway. Griffey Remodeling did a complete kitchen overhaul -- new cabinets, new granite counters, new backsplash, added an island, new undermount sink and garbage disposal, new canned lighting in kitchen and adjoining family room, refurbished the hard wood floors throughout the first floor, painted the walls and baseboards in the kitchen, living room, dining room, family room, bathroom, and foyer. Griffey Remodeling did an amazing job transforming our kitchen from drab (circa 1986) to dynamic! The workers were very professional, courteous, and conscientious. The project was completed on time, even though we added a few upgrades along the way. And, the project stayed on budget, except in areas where we opted to go over our budgeted amount, like selecting a higher grade of granite, and a more expensive sink. The products they used were top-notch, from the quality of the cabinetry to the look and durability of the stainless steel sink. Griffey added nice carpentry details -- a wooden arch over the sink, crown modeling above the cabinets, finishing details on the bottoms of the over-head cabinets, etc. They spent time helping me with the counter selection and the tile selection, listening as I explained what I wanted, and helping me to come up with choices that maximized the visual impact, yet staying within my comfort zone as the homeowner. The project manager kept us informed every step of the way, and things ran very smoothly considering if was a multi-week process. Any project of this magnitude is disruptive and the floor project required us to be out of our home for three days, but we felt the Griffey employees worked to minimize our inconvenience as much as possible. The workers were very good with our dog, too, and we were worried about how the dog would cope with all the goings-on. Some of the workers were dog owners, and they would pet our dog each day and put her at ease. The workers also helped with little touches not really in their job description, whether it was re-hanging some pictures or installing a new under-the-counter radio/CD player. From top to bottom, Griffey Remodeling did an outstanding job, and we are in awe of our beautiful kitchen and the entire first floor of our home!

He was great about handling issues that came up (when dealing with a house that is 65 years old there will be issues). There were other companies that gave us bids that were slightly less, but they couldn't provide the value-add services like design advice that Griffey could.

We had an oversized 2 car garage added which had to access a lower level. In addition, the lower level itself was turned into a walkout. Also, an area was added above the garage which includes a 15 x 18 office with a closet, and a walk-in 7x10 closet - all accessible from the existing master bedroom. Underpinning (and associated engineering) was necessary, as well as tying in into the current house. I would say this was far from a typical "add a two car garage with an office above it"." Overall, the people involved were great - from design, to engineering, to project management to the individual tradesmen (concrete, electric, roofing, HVAC, etc.) all the way through punchout. Once things were rolling, they rolled along well - both on time and on budget. You would not know that the addition was anything other than original. I have worked with a lot of contractors over the years on commercial buildings and residential units as well, and I would definitely pay Griffey a 120 - 125of anyone else. You get what you pay for, and they are worth a premium. I have been involved in many other remodeling projects where the trick seems to be "start the job (and as many other jobs as possible), and then stop answering the phone. This was NOT the case with Griffey. It was really the closest thing I have ever seen to "this is exactly what you will get." They neither over-promise nor under-promise. Meet Charlie, and trust that what he says is what will happen. He is not a typical contractor who seems like he is trying to sell you a used car. He listens and is low key. Tell him what you want, and that's what you'll get with no surprises.

At the estimate stage they identified potential difficulties in demolition of the original tile floor and preparation of the surface for the new wood flooring, and prepared a plan B with impact on schedule and cost. As promised, the site was cleaned at end of each working day and disruption to the household was minimized. When late delivery of flooring threatened to carry the planned installation process to a second week, Don worked longer days so that we’d have the bulk of the flooring in place before the weekend. Work included replacing laminate kitchen counters with granite, adding under cabinet lighting, installing a replacement under cabinet microwave and replacing sink and faucet. This was a relatively small project. I believe I received good design advice. The workers were timely, courteous and very competent. The project manager was diligent with communication, professional, helpful and I believe he made every effort to assure my satisfaction with the outcome...and I'm very pleased with the finished product.

Charlie Griffey and Griffey Remodeling took an unfinished basement and finished it out completely, including drywall, carpet, painting, and electrical, along with a bathroom and separate bedroom. We have stonework downstairs. I couldn't have asked for a better experience. I suspect that if I'd shopped extensively I might have found a slightly lower price. What I would not have found was a company that I trusted both to plan and complete a terrific basement, without overcharging me or shorting on quality - and you get what you pay for. From the planning stage, when Charlie worked with my wife and I on our plans, to the final complete date twelve weeks after it was started, I have essentially no complaints. Both in its creative aspects (stonework that matches the outside of our house and will make our two year old think she lives ina castle when she gets a little older) and in the quality of the construction, I have nothing but good things to say. Even the speedbumps were swiftly and competently dealt with - when a problem with our humidifier caused a minor water spill, Charlie immediately sent his guys over to fix the problem, and when we noticed (weeks after the job was done and paid up) that a door didn't close right, it was fixed within a couple of days at no cost to us. One of the biggest problems in finding a contractor for a large job is knowing who to trust, both to *not* go over budget and to complete the work competently; I would endorse Griffey Remodeling without limitation.

Griffey Remodeling completed a total remodel of our kitchen and half bath, last done in the 1980's. It was a big job that included design plans, a tear-out of the old and installation of the new cabinets, granite countertop, tile backsplash, lighting, fixtures, and hardwood flooring. Plus all new appliances (stainless steel). In addition, they removed a partial wall between our kitchen and family room, extended the hard wood floor from the kitchen into the entry way and also inot the family room, painted the ceiling and walls in the kitchen, bathroom, and family room, painted the dark wood trim a creamy white in all of these rooms plus all the other rooms on the first floor and the staircase, and installed new carpet in the living room, dining room, study, and stairs. It's like living in a new home and we love it! From start to finish, it was a pleasure working with this fine company. It all starts with the owner, Charlie Griffey, who is professional, fair-minded, trustworthy, very conscientious, a perfectionist (a most desibrable trait when you're paying someone to tear apart and rebuild your home - he wants it to be right), and also personable, easy to work with, and funny - a real necessity because remodeling is very stressful for the homeowner and being able to have a good laugh in the midst of it all is most therapeutic! Kevin, who managed the job day to day, also is great and easy to work with - he kept us posted on the work to be done, the time schedule, who to expect in the house on a given day, etc., which made things easier for us. The main crew at our home was Larry and John. They were there most days, often early in morning, yet they always respected our privacy - we felt very comfortable with them and they did great work. Charlie works with several companies on a regular basis for cabinets, countertops, flooring supplies, fixtures, etc. All were reliable with high standards. We extended the job as time went by and Charlie and Kevin were open to that and helped us think through these additions. We had other estimates for this job, some lower, some hgher. We did not go with the lower estimates because we believed them to be underpriced for what we wanted, either knowingly in a bid to get our business with costs to rise as the project progressed or because they did not have standards for the work at the level we wanted. I would advise anyone to be careful about low bids for these reasons. Also, some things always go wrong with these big remodeling jobs - you can (will) run into unexpected problems or delays - so you want to be working with someone with whom you can be frank and who is good at problem solving and adjusting the plan. We are so happy with the results and marvel at the change! We will hire Griffey Remodeling again and recommend them highy to anyone who wants quality work at fair price.

The primary contact during the entire process was Charlie Griffey, the owner of the company.Member Comments: The entire project from selecting a basement remodeling contractor and exploring the possibilities through execution and completion of the project is quite a lengthy process. There are so many things that went exceedingly well, that I am attempting to share my experience by way of a top ten list. Here are my top ten reasons why I am totally satisfied with Griffey Remodeling and why I would highly recommend this company: 1. No surprises (except for pleasant ones) There were no surprises for additional costs or something that was "not included". We did make some changes and upgrades after signing the contract, but these were for features that were 100% optional with the costs clearly understood. 2. Design ideas Design is clearly a strength of Charlie Griffey. Charlie had a vision for our basement far beyond what other contractors offered. I was looking for a "wow factor" without spending too much. Charlie provided "wow factor" design options with consideration for my project budget. 3. Value The value proposition is probably the most important aspect of any purchase. Despite this project being "expensive", it was a good value. Charlie did provide alternatives for a much lower cost, however, the project cost was driven by our choices. I did get other estimates for my project and found Griffey Remodeling to be cost competitive as providing the best value especially given the quality of the materials, basement features and design. 4. Attention to Detail Charlie's attention to detail is amazing. It seems important to Charlie that his design is well executed. Getting it done right is more important than just getting it done. Every brick, every tile, every beam was perfectly centered. Care was taken to match materials with the rest of the house. If something was not done just right, Charlie would have it fixed or done over. 5. Experts on the Team As a pleasent surprise, Charlie's team included various experts that enhanced the results of the project. For example, Charlie's team included award winning decorators that assisted in the selection of the tile, brick, wainscoting, carpet, paint, lighting, etc. that made everyting work together. 6. Easy to work with Charlie was very patient while we made our decision and did not try to "hard sell" his proposal. His communication was top notch and he was always willing to listen to our concerns and fully answer our questions in an affable manner. 7. Professionalism Every aspect of the project was handled in a professional manner. We were confident that everything would be compliant with regulations and comfortable with Griffey Remodeling having access to our basement for the duration of the project. The work on the project, except for certain specialty trades, was done by his own employees. 8. Craftsmanship One thing that really stands out is the fit and finish of the woodworking. The project included the finishing framing of a lot of windows and doors, plus wainscoting, columns and wood ceiling. The finish is impeccable. 9. Oversight of the project It was refreshing to be able to see work on the project progress and not have to be concerned about managing the results myself. Charlie and his leads would thoroughly inspect the work to assure that it met their very high standards. I never had to complain about anything. 10. Customer Satisfaction You get the feeling that customer satisfaction is very important to Griffey Remodeling. They exceeded my expectation.

Griffey Remodeling designed and built our new bathroom. The only bathroom on our first floor was in the master bedroom. We wanted to change the layout so that guests did not have to travel through our bedroom to get to the first floor bath. Griffey's design took out two closets to make the bathroom a little bigger and create the more public entrance that we wanted. They also removed part of an interior wall which opened up the back entryway to our house. Lastly, they built a new closet in the master bedroom to replace the one that we used to expand the bathroom. We could not be happier. After meeting with three different contractors, we had three completely different designs for the space. Mr. Griffey's design made the best use of the space in our opinion. I was especially pleased that he was able to salvage and reuse much of the trim and one of the doors for the project. This helps the new space blend in so well with the rest of the house. Once the plans were drawn up, I was asked to select all of the finishes. Mr. Griffey works with two designers who were a tremendous help during this process. They met with me to see the space and talk a little about my vision/style. They then brought samples to my house and we were able to make most all of the decisions from tile to lighting in one meeting. Next, I met the project manager. He maintained excellent communication with me from start to finish. I always knew where we stood with the project. He was always very responsive to any concerns I had. In the end, the project was completed on time and within our budget. We could not be happier with Griffey Remodeling and plan to contact them when we are ready to remodel our kitchen.
